What is the process for Invisalign and how long does treatment take?

Thursday, May 21, 2015

Invisalign is designed to be not only effective, but convenient and comfortable for your lifestyle as well. To begin the process, you must first be evaluated to discover if you are a good candidate. Through a thorough consultation and examination, my team and I can determine the severity of your orthodontic needs and whether or not Invisalign is the best option.

If we confirm you are a good candidate and you want to proceed, we will first create a map of your teeth using x-rays and impressions. This will help us create a customized plan based on the position of your teeth and how they will align with treatment. From this map, your individual aligners are custom made for your use only. These removable aligners are made of lightweight, durable plastic and fit over the top of your teeth. Each aligner is designed to be worn for two weeks, then switched out with a fresh set. During each two week cycle, the fit of the aligners is slightly changed to properly guide your teeth into position.

Certainly, one of the most distinctive aspects of Invisalign is the ability to remove aligners when eating. The aligners are also easy to clean with soap and water, or a specialized aligner cleaner is available as well. Cleaning your aligners regularly is important – this prevents bacteria build up between your teeth and aligner trays, which will help prevent periodontal issues and tooth decay. Even though they can be taken out, aligners should be worn 22 hours per day and only removed for meals, cleaning and sports-related activities.

In most cases, the total time of Invisalign treatment lasts between 9 and 18 months, depending on your individual needs. Once treatment is complete, you will also be instructed to wear a retainer at night. If you choose not to wear a retainer, however that will increase the chances of your teeth shifting out of alignment again.

Overall, the price, timeframe and post-care maintenance of Invisalign is comparable to traditional braces, but with the added convenience of clear, removable aligners you won’t find with brackets and wires.
