This style of orthodontics combines standard fixed braces with the European concepts of removable functional orthodontic appliances. This may be the preferred method of treatment in orthodontics.
Results are esthetically pleasing and more stable for adults as well as children using these techniques according to many orthodontic teaching institutions. Now in 2007, this also applies to an orthodontic technology called Invisalign “invisible” aligners and the low-force Damon orthodontic system.
Dr. Williams has treated his patients orthodontic problems for 20 years in his general practice of dentistry. In 1983 Dr. Williams began teaching orthodontics for the United States Dental Institute. Dr. Williams and his staff at Suwanee Dental Care are trained in recognizing and treating the majority of orthodontic problems.
Orthodontic screening exams are a part of all of our patient examinations.
Why European Orthodontic Treatment
Ninety percent of all people who need orthodontic treatment have crowded or protruding teeth. That is nine out of ten. You or your child may be in this ninety percent and ready to make an important decision about orthodontic treatment.
For many years the traditional method of treating crowded and protruding teeth has included removal of premolar, or bicuspid, teeth.
While this method has saved many patients from disfiguring overbites, a new and superior method of treating crowded and protruding teeth, based on careful research and analysis, has been adopted by a growing number of doctors in both Europe and North America.
Instead of removing two or four bicuspids at the start of treatment and, often, four third molars (wisdom teeth) later on, doctors are now removing only two to four second molars at the beginning of treatment with no routine subsequent extractions.
Research has shown that second molars can cause crowding and, in addition to alleviating that problem, second molar replacement allows healthy, fully developed third molars to erupt in place of the second molars. Consider also the following distinct advantages of second molar replacement:
- Healthier temporomandibular joints (jaw joints)
- Less costly extractions
- More pleasing facial aesthetics Natural facial contours and full smile Shorter treatment time
- Greater stability requiring less, if any, retention
- More teeth left in for better chewing and digestion
Before You Choose Orthodontic Treatment
Consider the European System of orthopedic development of the lower jaw.
We routinely utilize the Bionator/Orthopedic Corrector and Twin Block or Herbst Systems to “grow” the lower jaw into a more ideal relationship with the upper jaw. Sometimes teeth need to be removed. At times, there is no need to remove teeth other than wisdom teeth.
Braces are used simultaneously or following the orthopedic phase of growth and development in most cases. There is usually less time in braces with less gum irritation, less chance of tooth scarring, and the results are usually more stable for the long term.
